3 Spots for Spring: FAC Coming to a Close

Jan 09, 2025

Achieving the dream of becoming a licensed helicopter pilot can be a daunting task. For many aspiring aviators, the journey is riddled with challenges, multiple instructors, and recurring roadblocks. Kenny Keller, creator of Helicopter Online Ground School (H.O.G.S.), understands these hurdles and has created a specialized program designed to help pilots cross the finish line—the Final Approach Course. In this blog post, we delve into the genesis of this unique course, its structure, and how it stands out in the realm of helicopter training.

Inspiration from a Struggling Pilot

The concept behind the Final Approach Course is as inspiring as it is practical. Its origins trace back to 2017 and a H.O.G.S. member named Jamie Clear. Jamie owned an R-44 helicopter and had accumulated 200 hours of flight time. Despite his dedication, he had cycled through eight different instructors and was still unable to secure his private pilot license. Frustrated but persistent, Jamie reached out to H.O.G.S., hoping for a solution.

Turning Struggles into a Solution

Recognizing Jamie’s dedication and the gaps in his training, H.O.G.S. stepped in to help. A pilot was dispatched to bring Jamie and his helicopter to the H.O.G.S. facility. In nine days, Jamie’s training was completed, and he was sent home, now a licensed pilot. Reflecting on his experience, Jamie suggested that H.O.G.S. offer this intensive completion service to others. An approving local examiner even coined the name "Final Approach Course," likening it to the final, crucial leg of an aviator’s journey—getting the check-ride done. Thus, the Final Approach Course was born.

Pre-Arrival Preparation

Unlike traditional aviation schools, the Final Approach Course meticulously prepares students before they even arrive on site. Prospective trainees must first complete all their pre-requisites, including written exams and flight hours. H.O.G.S. further ensures readiness by holding pre-arrival Zoom calls to evaluate knowledge and discuss necessary preparations.

Intensive In-House Training

Upon arrival, pilots can expect an immersive and comprehensive instruction experience. The routine is structured into two daily flights: a morning flight and an afternoon flight, interspersed with ground training and paperwork sessions. This full-day setup avoids the rushed, fragmented lessons typical of many flight schools. Each day includes pre-flight discussions, actual flight time, post-flight debriefs, and thorough reviews, ensuring seamless and stress-free progress.

Personalized and Uninterrupted Instruction

One of the distinct advantages of the Final Approach Course is its emphasis on personalized attention. All instruction is one-on-one with Kenny Keller, the architect of the H.O.G.S. method. By eliminating the common practice of rotating between multiple instructors, the course provides consistency in training, which is crucial for mastering complex flight skills.

Amenities and Accessibility

H.O.G.S. operates out of a private hangar equipped with all necessary training materials and resources. Students have 24-hour access to the hangar, offering a quiet, focused environment to study or practice. This flexibility is particularly beneficial in cases where the accommodation, such as a noisy hotel, might not provide a conducive study atmosphere.

Inclusive and Value-Added Services

The course is not just about flying; it’s about the overall experience. Meals are included, ensuring students can focus entirely on their training without logistical distractions. Furthermore, the schedule includes ample downtime, allowing pilots to rest and recharge, ensuring they're always at their best.

Limited Availability and Selection

Given the intensive, personalized nature of the Final Approach Course, spots are limited. At the time of writing, only three places remain for the spring of 2025. Interested candidates must fill out a questionnaire to assess eligibility, ensuring that those selected are in the best position to benefit from and complete the program.

Cost Breakdown

The course offers two primary package choices: training in either the Robinson R-22 or R-44 helicopters. The R-44 package costs a minimum of $6,800, while the R-22 option starts at $5,300. These packages include all training necessary to prep for and pass the check-ride within the course's minimum timeframe of three days, plus an additional day dedicated to the check-ride.

The H.O.G.S. Final Approach Course is an innovative, life-changing program that bridges the gap for aspiring helicopter pilots on the brink of achieving their goals. By focusing on personalized, comprehensive training in a supportive environment, H.O.G.S. ensures that pilots can finally take to the skies with confidence. If you've been struggling to complete your pilot training, consider this your final approach to success—make the decision to soar with H.O.G.S. today.
