Introducing Brand New H.O.G.S. Instructor- CFI Hunter Gambill

Mar 27, 2025

Have you ever wondered what it takes to transition from a career in law enforcement to becoming a helicopter flight instructor? Meet Hunter Gambill, a passionate and talented individual who's doing just that with Helicopter Online Ground School (H.O.G.S.). In a recent conversation, Hunter shares his experiences, challenges, and triumphs with Chris Houser and host Kenny Keller, making it clear why he’s a perfect fit for training the next generation of pilots.

The Journey to Becoming a Flight Instructor

Hunter's fascination with helicopters began at an early age, inspired by a ride-along with IU Health Lifeline. Despite initially thinking a college degree was mandatory for a career in aviation, he took the leap into flight training through discovery flights. His meticulous approach to learning, which included crafting an impressive notebook from H.O.G.S. training videos, set him on a path to success.

With endorsements for the Robinson R-22 and R-44 helicopters and a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) license under his belt, Hunter is ahead of the curve at just 28. His trajectory was guided by mentorship from seasoned instructors, a resource Chris emphasizes as essential for any new CFI.

A Supportive Community and Valuable Mentorship

The camaraderie between Chris and Hunter is palpable, rooted in their shared background in law enforcement and a mutual passion for aviation. Chris, who began flying at age 30, sees great promise in Hunter's progress and has been instrumental in his training journey. Their professional friendship highlights the importance of community and support in navigating the challenges of becoming a new CFI.

From Law Enforcement to the Skies

While Hunter transitions from his existing career, he continues to learn and grow, taking on roles within the H.O.G.S. program, including participating in commercial and CFI approach courses. His first-hand account of flying into Chicago and viewing its skyline from a helicopter speaks volumes of the exciting experiences awaiting those brave enough to pursue their flying dreams.

Learning and Flying at a Premier Facility

Hunter praises the seamlessness of training at their well-organized facility, which offers everything a budding pilot could need—from helicopters and instructors to ground school and logbooks—all under one roof. Personal touches, like spending the night before a check ride at the facility, highlight the dedication both Hunter and his mentors have toward nurturing a stress-free learning environment.

The Road Ahead

With aspirations to become an EMS pilot and a CFI-I, Hunter embodies the ethos of continuous learning and adapting in aviation. Chris's encouragement and advice, coupled with Hunter's ambition and genuine love for flying, ensure a bright future for this new instructor, influencing and inspiring many other budding pilots.

To conclude, we're thrilled to officially welcome Hunter Gambill to the H.O.G.S. team. He's not just bringing skills; he's bringing a story of passion, perseverance, and dedication that will no doubt motivate and guide those lucky enough to learn under his instruction.
