The Dark Side of Autorotation Training: Straight & 180 Practice Can Scar Pilots

Apr 15, 2023

Hey there fellow helicopter enthusiasts,

Today, I want to talk about something that's been on my mind for a while now: The Dark Side of Autorotation Training. Specifically, how straight and 180 practice can scar pilots.

Now, don't get me wrong, straight in and 180 autos are essential to pass the standards of the practical test. But the problem is that some students are only taught those two options. They're never taught that they can do autos from 90 degrees, 150 degrees, or any other angle that might better suit their situation.

The Dark Side of Autorotation Training: How Straight & 180 Practice Can Scar Pilots

This limited training can cause pilots to think that they only have two options: straight in or 180. And when they find themselves in a situation where those options aren't feasible, they panic and potentially make a fatal mistake.

That's why, at Helicopter Online Ground School, we don't just focus on straight in and 180 autos. We teach our students how to do autos from various angles so that they can be prepared for any situation that might arise.

We also focus on mastering the quick stop, which is a great benefit for autorotation practice. The quick stop can help pilots become more comfortable with the collective and cyclic inputs required for a successful autorotation, which can ultimately lead to safer flights.

In conclusion, while straight in and 180 autos are important, they're not the only options. By teaching students how to do autos from various angles, we can help prevent them from panicking and making fatal mistakes. And by mastering the quick stop, we can help them become more comfortable with the inputs required for a successful autorotation.
