Jet Ranger Helicopter Normal Approach

In the #4 Jet Ranger Helicopter Training Video below we're going to work on setting up and flying a normal approach!

Hello, I'm Kenny Keller the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School and Author of the Amazon No. 1 Best Seller Helicopter Check Ride.

Let us help you with all of your ratings! We have four FAA certified courses, Private PilotCommercial PilotInstrument Pilot, and Certified Flight Instructor. We have a bundle pack called, Professional Pilot Lifetime Membership, that includes all this for life.

I don't care what aircraft you're flying, Robinson R22, Jet Ranger, Schweizer, along the line of aircraft, it does not matter. The key is a nice set up. We set up every normal approach the same way here. No matter what aircraft I'm in it doesn't matter. This is not specific to Bell 206 Jet Ranger.

There's a spot, a line of trees, if we come over that spot at 300 AGL that is a perfect approach angle down to the numbers. In this video, he's been flying the Jet Ranger Bell 206 in high winds so what's the first thing you think a student's going to do when they've been flying in a lot of wind and they get a calm day?

Probably going to come up short on your spot, would you think? Yes, very common, because he's used to having a lot of wind coming in so now on a calm day, he's going to have a tendency of coming out a little bit shy in the Bell 206 Jet Ranger.

That's totally normal, you have to learn to adjust these approaches on how much wind you have on that day. What are your conditions? What is your weight? First approach, pretty nice set up but then we end up a little bit short just due to the fact that he's used to having a lot of wind coming in on approach.

Remember setup is key. A Bell 206 Jet Ranger nice setup should have the same altitude air speed, same profile, every time you start that normal approach.

On a normal approach, collective controls your angle, cyclic controls your speed. It should always look like you're approaching those numbers at the same speed. Let's see how he does in this video, leave your comments down in the box below. Check out the approach in the Bell 206 Jet Ranger.

All right, let's see how smooth we can make this normal approach ... The camera's ready to film a beautiful, normal, nice one all the way down to the numbers.

Student: You better start flying.

Instructor: Very good, nice setup, 60, 1100. It's near our rate ascent and end trim, nice setup. Now, you don't have any wind helping you so you'll have to slow it down, work a little harder on slowing it down today than what you'd do on a windy day. Angle still looks nice, keeping it at trim until you're about 50 feet. Angle still looking pretty good. Looks like we're approaching those numbers at a brisk walk. Just a little bit left to get the center of the runway. Now keep your angle, it's looking really nice, it's been really good so far. Remember you've got to force yourself to keep the forward in there because that's our [inaudible 00:03:31] we end up short a lot of the time. Last on our feet, we needed more collective, more forward cyclic to keep that right down to the numbers. See now you're readjusting through the last couple of windy days, now you're readjusting again. Let's go do the same thing again, now this time let's do a take off without adding power because we are on this nice, smooth-, Jet Ranger Normal Approach Online Ground School
