Aeronautical Decision Making and Accident Review

Here we will discuss the important elements of aeronautical decision making and take a look at an R-44 Robinson helicopter accident. Three helicopter instructors presenting here, agree that personal minimums is a must! Set your personal minimums and apply Pave and IMSAFE to every flight.

Pilot, Aircraft, EnVironment, and External pressure. All these things need to be considered before every flight. Pilots will use the IMSAFE to self evaluate: Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, and Emotions.

These things are not just a must to know for the written test and check ride, they are real World considerations to stay safe!

As we discuss an R-44 Robinson helicopter crash, we can point out some things that may have prevented the accident. Keep in mind that there is always some details that cannot be known by simply watching the crash video. It does appear that the helicopter mission at hand, was providing joy rides.

  • The use of a coordinated ground crew is absolutely necessary in this type of environment.
  • Every take off needs to be done in a two step process, by getting the aircraft light on the skids and neutralizing all movement before the pick up.
  • Every departure from a hover needs to be preceeded by a pre take off hover check of the instruments, to ensure performance is within the limitations.
