Flight Instructor Autorotation Change PTS Effective 3-22-2016

Hello, I'm Kenny Keller, the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School and author of the Amazon bestseller Helicopter Check Ride. I want to talk to you about the CFI Check Ride change in autorotations.

This is a PTS change effective 3/22/16. We have been down this road before. About 10 years ago they removed full down autorotations from the Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor Practical Test Standards. Then a short time later the FAA decided to reinstate the full down autorotation to the PTS.

Don't be surprised if 6 months or a year down the road it changes again. There is a change that's coming where the PTS is going to be rearranged and changed and called the Airman Certification Standards. I wouldn't be surprised if it changes again when the new ACS comes out.

I was just on the FAA website and I looked up the PTS change as of 3/22/16. Let's take a look at the change. You will need to scroll down to page 10 where it tells us:

"An examiner may accept, at his or her discretion, a logbook endorsement in lieu of demonstrating these tasks during the practical test. This logbook endorsement must be given by a current flight instruction with a rotorcraft category and helicopter class rating on his or her flight instructor certificate that provided the training and can attest to the applicant's competence in these tasks. The following areas must be trained, and documented in the endorsement, as evidence of instructional knowledge relating to the element, common errors, performance, and correction of common errors related to straight-in and 180 autos. This logbook endorsement may be accepted, at the discretion of the examiner, provided the practical test is not a retest as a result of the applicant failing the previous practical test for deficiencies in instructional knowledge pertaining to the elements, common errors, performance, or correction of common errors related to straight-in or 180 autorotations."

I'm going to go back and point out "an examiner may accept, at his or her discretion, a logbook endorsement in lieu of demonstrating these tasks during the practical test".

Personally, I'm going to wait and see what they do with the ACS before I get too excited about it!
