Flight Instructor Of The Year Recommendation Taz Christman

To General Aviation Awards Committee,

It would be my honor to recommend Dan Christman for Flight Instructor of the Year.  My name is Kenny Keller.  I am the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School (HOGS), and author of the Amazon best seller Helicopter Check Ride.  Over the past five years, we've helped hundreds of pilots from all over the world successfully pass their check ride through my online helicopter training program.  I first met Dan Christman, or Taz as I know him, about 2 years ago when he stopped in to our studio to say hi.  We are based in Plymouth Indiana, which is about 20 min north of where Dan grew up.  He was home visiting family and wanted to express his thanks for my videos that had helped him through his helicopter training.

While talking with Taz, I soon realized he was a highly experienced instructor in both airplanes and helicopters.  Up until this point my online ground school had courses for Private, Commercial and CFI.  It was lacking an Instrument course.  Since Taz was an experienced Instrument pilot and CFII in both Airplanes and Helicopters, I asked if he would be interested in helping build an instrument course for HOGS.  He expressed interest in the collaboration.  Unfortunately, over the next year we both became busy with other projects and we were unable to get our project going.

Taz stopped back by this past spring when he was again visiting his family.  We had just begun a Live Tuesday Training program.  I asked Dan if he would be a guest instructor and help us present a topic while we live streamed it on the internet.  He did a great job.  This reenergized our Instrument Course discussion and we started making plans on what I was wanting in the course.

A few weeks later he started sending me videos that he had produced back in Las Vegas.  Right away I was amazed at the quality.  Each video was better than the last.  So far, he has sent us over 25 hours worth of video content for our Instrument Course.  These videos contained topics ranging from weather, approaches, arrivals, departures, and en-route procedures.  Since we went live with the instrument course a few months ago, we have had an amazing response from our members.  Several members have successfully passed their instrument check ride with the help of our course.

As of September 2017, our courses (including the Instrument course that Taz helped with) were selected by the FAA to be included in their Wings Pilot Proficiency program.

In addition to the instrument course, Taz has also been a contributor to our weekly Live Training Tuesday that we stream through our member site, as well as free on YouTube.  Taz has been a constant fixture on Tuesdays and always willing to provide his experience and insights.  This free training is provided to both members as well as non-members.  Every week we have students and pilots from all over the world tuning in to learn.

Knowing how much time it takes to create, record, and edit training videos I am amazed at how Taz has any time to be the chief instructor at Airwork Las Vegas, as well as his full-time job as a Deputy Commander with the Air Force.  I can’t think of anyone more deserving for the honor of flight instructor of the year than Dan “Taz” Christman.

 Sincerely,

Kenny Keller
