Helicopter Training and Check Ride Tips

Guest instructors, Chris Houser and Tannan Austin, discuss Check Ride Tips. The platform here is a live training event. You don't have to miss out. Sign up and join in. Live chat is allowed between members logged in and we answer questions that are posed to us in chat. If you choose to listen to the Podcast, listen to episodes 136-142 for my check ride tips.

Remember, the check ride is an open book test. The examiner will want to see that you can get to the answer. He wants emergency recognition and procedures rattled off from memory, but if he asks you to how many helicopter hours you must have logged before conducting a charity ride, you will have a chance to look it up. Never say "I don't know", but instead "I know I read that recently, I can look it up real quick to refresh my memory if you wish. I guarantee the examiner will have you look something up in the Far/Aim and possibly in the Helicopter Flying Handbook.

I encourage students to have a hard copy of both with them. Electronic copies are fine with some examiners, but the examiner will not know that you can navigate them if you are using a search engine to get to it. I see this posing a problem as we transition into the generation of pilots who download all materials electronically. If you come fly with me and I sign you off for the practical test, you will need hard copies. You will also need to be able to figure the course on a real paper vfr sectional with a plotter and get a heading by considering magnetic deviation/variation and using the e6b to figure wind correction.

Another thing electronics have made us lazy on is weather reports. Do not expect the examiner to allow a "translated" version of a metar or taf. He will want to see that you can read a raw version.

Helicopter Online Ground School has helped thousands pass their checkride and many have claimed to use our video learning as their sole source of ground school. We are FAA approved for WINGS credit and you can work towards a WINGS phase even before you ever take your first flight. Your checkride can complete the phase if you already have the course credits we offer. So my biggest tip is to join our ground school, it is proven effective for private, commercial, flight instructor, and now instrument.

Let us help you with all of your ratings! We have four FAA certified courses, Private PilotCommercial PilotInstrument Pilot, and Certified Flight Instructor. We have a bundle pack called Professional Pilot Lifetime Membership, which includes all this for life.
