Inadvertent Flight Into Instrument Meteorological Conditions: Part1

One of the leading causes for helicopter accidents today is VFR flight into IFR conditions. This is part 1, of a two part discussion.

Kenny Keller is the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School. He is an experienced helicopter flight instructor and commercial helicopter pilot. He discusses the dangers of flying into instrument conditions as he discusses a recent accident and some of his own experiences with news helicopter flying and EMS helicopter flying. The best practice is to avoid flying into instrument conditions with good flight planning. Make the effort to get some instrument orientation training, which may help if one day you accidently fly into instrument conditions. www.helicopterground.com has four FAA certified courses, including an instrument course.

  • All pilots need to set personal minimums and stick to them
  • Pilots need to check the weather carefully, every flight
  • All pilots should obtain simulated instrument training at the very least
  • Instrument pilots should stay proficient with their skills
