Should I do my IFR Instrument Training before Commercial Rating?

Hello I'm Kenny Keller, the creator Helicopter Online Ground School. I want to answer a question about instrument IFR ratings that came from one of our members.

This member asked, "Thank you again for your online ground school. I do not know what I would do without it. So, I just passed my private and working on my commercial and I had a question about instrument IFR. Would it be better to already have my IFR private pilot, before finishing my commercial pilot rating, or should I get my commercial and then add on the instrument IFR?"

For me that's an easy answer. Yes, go ahead and do the instrument. Whether you're doing it as an add on rating or whether you're doing it as a first initial instrument. If you have your helicopter private and you're going for your helicopter commercial, by all means, I would do the instrument rating before you get the commercial, because you get your private. Then as you're logging your duel time, getting your instrument instruction, which is Piloting in Command time that you need for the commercial.

By all means, I would do it. If you have the funds and you have the time to do the studying. If there is some reason why you just got to get the commercial, because you have a job waiting and you want to do the instrument later you could. That's what I did. I did the instrument after I'd been a CFI for a few years and looking back, I wished I would've done it prior to the commercial, because again, you're spending your time and energy, working on the instrument rating, but as a private pilot, you're logging that precious Pilot In Command time that you need for the commercial rating
